It's the Pledge,
God Damnit!

| http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/03/03/pledge.of.allegiance.reut/index.html Today I was reading the news blurbs on cnn.com and found a story I’m sure everyone’s fairly familiar with. Now since I have this here webpage, I’m gonna put my two cents in on the subject. A while ago, a lawsuit was filed by a guy named Michael Newdow against a California grade school claiming that his daughter shouldn’t be forced to say the Pledge of Allegiance, which contains the phrase, “Under God.” This suit was ruled in favor of the school district and Mr. Newdow immediately went to the 9th Circuit Appellate Court, who ruled in favor of Mr. Newdow. Now, I may have some of the details wrong here, but the point is that this 9th Circuit Court ruled to have the schools in its district stop saying the Pledge of Allegiance. My question is this: If the “Under God” line is what’s bad about it, why can’t they just leave it out? Or maybe, since the word “God” (with a capital G) refers to a specific god (usually the Christian God), couldn’t the kids just say the word “god” with a lowercase g? I guess that would bring up the question “How does one distinguish that from the uppercase God, though?” I have the answer. Perhaps the “soft” pronunciation of the letter g would help! Go ahead, say it aloud with me…”One nation, under Jod...” Ok, well...maybe not. I suppose the argument here is that this guy is an atheist and that he “disbelieves” the existence of God or any god. I guess he probably feels it’s wrong for people to force their beliefs on others. Well buddy, if you’re suing the school to make them stop saying the Pledge, how are you not forcing your beliefs (or in this case, disbelief) on the 30 other kids in the class? If your 8 year-old daughter doesn’t want to say “Under God” once a day before class, she can just sit down and keep her mouth shut. I highly doubt she’s going to be emotionally scarred from reciting a little passage that she probably doesn’t even understand anyway. And if she’s too young to file the suit, tough shit. She can wait until she’s old enough. And, if you don’t like it, move to Iraq. We’ll see you in a couple weeks. --Oh my god, if you can’t believe these god damn hippies and their god-forsaken politically correct godfodder either, tell me about it: deeznutso@excite.com |
